48 Hours in La Paz , Baja California: Your Perfect Side Trip from Cabo

When you think of a Mexican coastal getaway, Cabo San Lucas likely comes to mind first. But just a short two hour drive away lies another gem waiting to be discovered: La Paz, Baja California Sur.

In this article, we'll take you on a whirlwind 48-hour journey through this tranquil city and show you how to make the most of your visit. Plus, we'll reveal a luxurious twist: the option to rent a yacht for an unforgettable experience on the Sea of Cortez.

Day 1: Arrival and Exploration

Morning: Embrace Serenity at Playa Balandra

Upon your arrival in La Paz, you'll immediately sense a different vibe. Known for its laid-back atmosphere, the city offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Cabo San Lucas. Start your day with a visit to Playa Balandra, a stunning beach with crystal-clear waters and unique rock formations. Spend your morning here basking in the tranquility, swimming, and taking Instagram-worthy photos.

Lunch: Seafood Delights at El Gusto!

On my first trip to La Paz I had the opportunity to try fish tacos in a small “carreta” taco stand , with plenty of salsas , going all the way from mild avocado salsa to get an extinguisher or pitcher-of -fresh-milk- nearby hot , and all sorts of fixings to compliment the perfectly made fish tacos , which by the way , I personally had the chance to try in La Paz , that in my opinion is THE world capital of the Fish Taco

That being said , if you feel more comfortable in a sit down restaurant you can head directly to the charming El Gusto! restaurant for lunch, where you'll savor the freshest seafood dishes. From ceviche to grilled fish tacos, every bite is a taste of the Sea of Cortez's bounty.

Afternoon: Explore La Paz's Malecón

Take a leisurely stroll along La Paz's picturesque Malecón. This waterfront promenade offers stunning views of the sea, with art installations, cafes, and shops to explore along the way. Be sure to stop by the iconic La Paz sign for a memorable photo opportunity.

Late Afternoon: Discover Espíritu Santo Island

For a touch of adventure, consider a yacht excursion to Espíritu Santo Island. You can conveniently book it through Viator in advance.

Discover crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life, including playful sea lions. Snorkel in pristine coves, relax on deserted beaches, and enjoy the beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Renting a yacht allows you to experience the Sea of Cortez in style and exclusivity.

Evening: Dinner at Nim Restaurant

Indulge in a luxurious dinner at Nim Restaurant, renowned for its contemporary Mexican cuisine. Savor exquisite dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients, all served in an elegant and inviting atmosphere.

Day 2: Nature and Farewell

Morning: Sunrise at Tecolote Beach

Wake up early to catch the sunrise at Tecolote Beach. This tranquil spot offers a serene start to your day, with calm waters perfect for swimming or kayaking. Consider packing a picnic breakfast and enjoying it on the beach.

Lunch: Local Flavor at El Ranchero Restaurant

For a taste of traditional Baja flavors, head to El Ranchero Restaurant for lunch. Try their succulent carne asada or seafood specialties, accompanied by handmade tortillas and salsas.

Afternoon: Snorkeling at Balandra Bay

Return to Playa Balandra for an afternoon of snorkeling. The bay's gentle waters and abundant marine life make it an ideal spot for exploring underwater wonders. If you have your snorkel gear, don't forget to bring it along.
